Biosciences Opportunities Preview Program

What is BOPs?
Fall 2010 was the first annual Biosciences Opportunities (BOPs) preview weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  The event was a huge success and BOPS has now become an annual event to be held each fall. For 2015, BOPs will be held October 8-11. The BOPs preview weekend introduces highly qualified prospective graduate students to bioscience PhD programs offered at the UW-Madison and the breadth of research opportunities available on campus.

Why apply to BOPs?
During the BOPs preview weekend you will have the opportunity to: explore the breadth of biological PhD research programs available at UW-Madison through interaction with current students and faculty, discover how approachable and friendly the research community is at UW-Madison, and experience first hand the quality of life Madison has to offer.

BOPs Weekend Overview
Throughout the preview weekend there will be many opportunities for you to interact informally with current graduate students and faculty members in order to make important connections in the scientific community.  Specific events during BOPs will include: lab and research facility tours that will give you a sense of what it is like to be a graduate student in a research lab; structured time to meet with PhD program representatives, sessions to help you think about which graduate program is the best fit for you and to help you prepare the most competitive graduate school application possible.  BOPs will be a great opportunity for you to find out directly what the UW-Madison biological sciences community has to offer you!

Cost to Attend
All visit expenses (including travel, lodging, and on-campus meals) are provided for those who are selected to attend.  Slots for talented students to preview the UW-Madison PhD graduate programs are limited so be sure to apply soon!

Application & Selection Timeframe
The BOPs application will be available online by June or July each year. Applications must be complete by the deadline and no late materials will be accepted. We strongly encourage applicants to inquire with the program if you are concerned about the status of your application or completing it on time. The review process for applications will take place throughout the month of August.  Applicants will be notified by late August-early September if they have been selected to attend the UW-Madison BOPs weekend.  Between 15-20 prospective students will be selected to attend BOPs and each student will receive an application fee waiver for the UW-Madison Graduate School online application after the visit weekend.

UW-Madison

At Wisconsin, you will be part of an academic environment in which you are challenged and encouraged to grow intellectually by your peers and professors.

An added benefit is living and learning on a campus that is nestled between two lakes and located in a capital city with a bustling downtown. Madison feels like a small city with the benefits of an urban environment.
